It's a clan's world

Abdi's relatives (and this includes the people of his clan) were under the impression that we were going to pay them huge amounts of money because we are making 'Abdi's film.' Since we arrived in Somaliland we've been trying to explain that Abdi's heirs -sadly- only have the rights to Abdi's idea fee. They think they are entitled to a whole lot of money, how and why they think that remains unclear. We have spoken with greybearded clan-elders, brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins (20 times removed). To no avail. The clan then appointed Said to be their spokesman and negotiator. It turned out that Said and me are of the same clan! He is a Yorkshireman (of the Sheffield branch) and I of course am Yorshire gypsy. Good 'un! As I am typing this Said (the Iceman) is talking with the clan council to help them take the final hurdle. Here we are having lunch at the Imperial where Said promised me a can of Boddy's...  Photo by Willem Q.
